Breadcrumbs

Updated

Breadcrumbs show visitors where a page sits on your site (“Home › Blog › Post title”). Add them in any of these ways:

  • Block editor or site editor: add the SEO Breadcrumbs block. On WordPress 7.0 and later, WordPress’s own Breadcrumbs block can use the plugin’s trail too.
  • Shortcode: [wpiseo_breadcrumbs] (optional class and separator).
  • Theme template: call the template function.

Theme template

<?php if ( function_exists( 'wpiseo_breadcrumbs' ) ) { wpiseo_breadcrumbs(); } ?>

Settings

SEO → Breadcrumbs sets:

  • the separator and the home label
  • an optional prefix (“You are here:”)
  • the labels for search results and 404 pages
  • whether the home link, the current page and the blog page are shown
  • which taxonomy appears in the trail for each post type

You can also turn off the plugin’s minimal CSS to style breadcrumbs yourself. A post’s Primary category and Breadcrumb title (in the editor’s Advanced tab) control its own trail.
