In the block editor, click the SEO icon in the top toolbar to open the SEO sidebar. In the classic editor, the SEO box sits below the content. To also get the box below the content in the block editor, turn it on in SEO → Settings → Advanced.
The panel has the tabs SEO, Readability, Social, Schema and Advanced. Readability, Social and Schema only show when their module is on. With Pro, a More tab is added.
SEO tab
- Search result: a live preview of how the page may look in Google, for desktop and mobile.
- SEO title: the title shown in search results and the browser tab. The preview shows its width in pixels; aim for less than about 600px. Use template variables such as
%title%. - Meta description: the snippet shown under the title. Aim for 120–160 characters. Left empty, the default template is used: the excerpt, or the start of the content, shortened to about 160 characters.
- Focus keywords: up to five words or phrases you want the page to rank for. The first one is the main keyword. You are warned if another post already uses it.
- SEO analysis: a checklist and score based on your focus keyword (title, description, URL, headings, content length, links, images and more). The score appears in the post list.
- Google Search (28 days): when Search Console is connected, the page’s clicks, impressions, position and top searches.
- Internal links: how many posts link here, and suggestions of related posts to link to.
Readability tab
Checks sentence and paragraph length, subheadings, transition words and reading ease (and passive voice in English).
Language-specific checks cover English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Hindi and Nepali; reading ease uses the formula published for each language (there is none for Hindi and Nepali). Other languages get the general checks.
Social tab
Title, description and image for Facebook, LinkedIn and others (Open Graph) and for X (Twitter). Without them, the SEO title, description and featured image are used.
Schema tab
- Page & article type: what kind of page this is (for example WebPage, AboutPage, ContactPage) and the article type (Article, BlogPosting, NewsArticle and more).
- Structured data: add one or more types that describe the content: FAQ, How-to, Recipe, Event, Video, Job posting, Course, Software, Book or Product. Fill in the form; required fields are marked. Google uses this data for rich results.
Advanced tab
- Search engine visibility: allow or block indexing for this page, add nofollow, and advanced directives (noarchive, nosnippet, noimageindex).
- Canonical URL: point search engines to the main version of duplicate content.
- Breadcrumb title: a shorter label for this page in breadcrumbs.
- Primary category: which category to use in breadcrumbs and URLs when the post has several.
More tab (Pro)
With Pro, the More tab holds custom structured data, the switch for automatic links on this post, and its SEO history.
